Serena Williams has won the US Open four times (1999, 2002, 2008, 2012) and has finished runner-up in New York twice (2001, 2011). The 16-time Grand Slam champion will be playing in her third straight US Open final this afternoon against No. 2 seed Victoria Azarenka in a rematch of last year’s final. She enters the final with a 66-4 record and with eight titles under her belt this year. Having won the Emirates Airline US Open Series Bonus Challenge, she has the chance to receive $3.6 million in prize money if she captures the title.
Serena recently answered questions in the latest installment of “In a New York Minute.” Find out which player she'd want as a New York tour guide, her favorite shopping spot, what Broadway shows she’s attended and much more.
USOpen.org: Which fellow player would you rely on to be your New York tour guide?
Serena Williams: James Blake, of course. He’s kind of from New York.
USOpen.org: Have you ever had any interesting New York subway experiences?
Serena Williams: You know, I’ve never, never used the subway. I’ve never been on it. Maybe I’ll have James take me on it.
USOpen.org: Where is your favorite shopping area in New York?
Serena Williams: Gosh, I think I like Madison Avenue the best. I love Christian Louboutin. It’s in the 80s. I don’t do a lot of shopping when I’m in New York – at least I try not to.
USOpen.org: A Mets fan or a Yankees fan?
Serena Williams: I don’t really follow baseball, so I can’t answer that. I’m a hard-core football fan. I’m a Giants fan. Well, I’m a Dolphins fan (a minority owner), but I definitely am a Giants fan because of Eli (Manning).
USOpen.org: Do you have a favorite celebrity you’ve seen at the US Open or in the city?
Serena Williams: Hmmm… that’s a good question. I never get to meet them, really. I think Anita Baker. One time I did meet her at the Open.
USOpen.org: Do you like going to Broadway shows?
Serena Williams: Yes, I do a lot of Broadway shows. I did “American Idiot” a few times. I did “Mary Poppins,” which was actually excellent. I’ve done “Little Mermaid” and “The Lion King.” I try to do all the Broadway shows. That’s where I spend a lot of time.
USOpen.org: Which other player would you take to hang out with in Central Park and visit the zoo?
Serena Williams: I would take Jamie Hampton. She seems like she would be into going to Central Park and the zoo.
USOpen.org: Do you have any favorite restaurants in the city?
Serena Williams: Bagatelle. It’s downtown.
USOpen.org: Which tennis player would you buy a hotdog from off of a street cart in Manhattan?
Serena Williams: Venus because I trust her. I don’t buy food off the carts.
